We invite students and scientists to participate in a workshop focused on Post-Irradiation Examination (PIE), which we organize as part of the ECC-SMART project.
Post-irradiation examination (PIE) is vital for the safe operation of current nuclear power plants and important for the development of new generations of nuclear reactors and technologies. The examination of irradiated fuel rods, specimens from surveillance programs, or specimens from in-pile and other irradiation experiments is usually done at hot cell laboratories. The data obtained are utilized by fuel developers, manufacturers, operators, regulators, material scientists, and metallurgists for fuel and nuclear materials improvement, ultimately enhancing operating safety, efficiency, and reliability.
The workshop will consist of theoretical courses and practical performances of PIE techniques. In addition, lab tours and visits to relevant infrastructure, including the research reactor, will be provided. The 5-day official program will be accompanied by social activities and a tour around the Prague city centre.
Theoretical courses will introduce the behaviour of materials under neutron and proton irradiation, methods used for PIE and an interesting view into the real applications such as the surveillance program, LTO and fuel inspection. Lectures will be given by invited nuclear experts. The practical part will include work performed in hot cells with a special focus on new opportunities and challenges.
Young researchers and students interested in enhancing their research skills are invited to register for the upcoming event. The number of places is limited. Reach out to be one of the 25 admitted students who will truly benefit from this unique practice-oriented training.
The event is supported by the international project ECC-SMART (Joint European Canadian Chinese Development of Small Modular Reactor Technology) thus it is free of charge for the admitted students. Financial support will cover expenses related to the event itself. Accepted applicants are expected to organize and finance the journey on their own. The travel costs of young researchers and students may be subject to a partial reimbursement through the EU ENEN2plus project.
