60 years ago, exactly on 24 September 1957 at 11:52 p.m.,the last of the overall 26 fuel cassettes was inserted into the first Czechoslovak nuclear reactor VVR-S. The first controlled nuclear fission chain reaction was performed in Řež and Czechoslovakia has become the 9th country in the world to accomplish that.

The VVR-S reactor, together with different modifications and extensions, was in operation for 30 years, after the reconstruction it was substituted with the new light-water reactor LVR-15, which has been in constant operation since 1 June 1995 until nowadays.
